wHY is it called a "virtual" run?

The term virtual according to Oxford Dictionary, “implies almost or nearly as described, but not completely or according to strict definition”. Traditional and Virtual runs are both competitions but they differ in the flexibility and convenience of time and location. Traditional races are scheduled at a specific time and place and at a specific distance. Virtual runs are at your own time and place. You also choose the distance.
